Keynote by Ken Perlin - Pride and Prejudice and Mixed Reality

Ken Perlin

As technology continually advances our ability to merge real and virtual worlds, how will we reconcile new forms of interaction with the imperatives of art and literature? Perhaps we need a common place for our old and new virtual realities to enhance each other.
We will look at some new ways of merging divergent paradigms into a coherent experience, from Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" to collaborative live programming to Vernor Vinge's vision of a digitally transformed world where everybody is "wearing".

About the Workshop

The motivation of this workshop is to discuss future direction of content authoring in the field of Augmented Reality, as well as to discuss the current state of art on content creation and content authoring for augmented reality. The workshop will comprise of a paper session where authoring papers, late-breaking results and overviews over state-of-the-art are presented. In the afternoon, we will follow up with discussion sessions on different topics ranging from content creation and authoring to content distribution for AR and a short closing session.
We want to collect ideas and thoughts of researches about desired approaches for authoring content for AR, as well as debate about current and future needs to guarantee a high quality as well as quantity of content for AR. The research issues that the workshop addresses will be determined by the papers submitted. Possible topics are:

The proposed research issues of this workshop are directly linked to the emerging field of Mixed and Augmented Reality, as content authoring is an important topic not only for future research but also in the field of commercial AR applications.

Call for Participation

The workshop on Authoring Solutions for Augmented Reality will be an opportunity to present short authoring or content creation papers on topics relevant for Mixed and Augmented Reality. We are seeking to capture the state of the art as well as discussing future concepts ranging from a casual user to the day-to-day workflow of an expert.

To present at the workshop, submit a 4-page paper using the TVCG template for ISMAR 2012 papers (available here http://www.cs.sfu.ca/~vis/Tasks/camera.html) to ismarauthoringworkshop@icg.tugraz.at.
The submitted papers will be reviewed by the organizing committee and selected for presentation. Authors will be notified of the results and a final deadline for submitting the final version. For continuously updated information refer to the workshop webpage. A plain-text version of the call for papers can be found here.
